Installing the plugin is simple. Choose one of the two methods below:

1. Via WordPress Admin:

  1. In your WordPress dashboard, navigate to Plugins → Add New.
  2. Search for "Folderify".
  3. Click Install Now followed by Activate.

2. Manual Installation (Via ZIP):

  1. Download the plugin in .zip format from the official source.
  2. Navigate to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
  3. Select the downloaded archive, click Install Now, and activate it.
💡

Once activated, a new Folderify menu will appear in your dashboard, along with the folder sidebar in the Media → Library page.

3. Settings

You can manage all configuration options by navigating to the Folderify menu item in your WordPress dashboard.

General Settings

  • Folder Access Mode: Determine how folders are accessed.
Global mode displays the same folders to all users.
Private (Pro) mode gives each user their own unique folder structure (Administrators can view all).
  • Path & Breadcrumbs (Pro): Toggle the visibility of the current folder path and interactive subfolders above the media gallery grid.
  • Post Types: Choose which post types (e.g., Pages, Posts) should have the folder sidebar enabled in their respective media selection dialogs.
  • Folder Counter: Decide whether the file count badge next to a folder should reflect strictly the contents of that exact folder, or include the files within its subfolders recursively.
  • Data & Privacy: Toggle whether all Folderify data (settings and custom tables) should be permanently deleted when the plugin is uninstalled.

4. Folder Management

Creating a New Folder

In the Media Library, click the + (Add folder) button in the left sidebar. Enter the folder name and press Enter.

Renaming a Folder

Double-click the desired folder, or right-click it and select Rename from the context menu.

Deleting a Folder

Select Delete from the folder's context menu.

⚠️

Important: Deleting a folder does NOT delete the media files within it. The files will simply revert to an "Uncategorized" state.

Moving Folders (Drag & Drop)

Click and drag a folder over or between other folders to instantly reorganize your structure. In the Pro version, this is how you create nested subfolders.

Coloring & Duplicating (Pro)

Right-click a folder to assign a custom color, or click "Duplicate" to instantly create an exact copy of the folder (including its internal structure).

5. Media Library Integration

Sorting Files

Select one or multiple media files from the grid on the right, and drag them directly into the desired folder in the left sidebar.

Uploading to Active Directory

If you have a specific folder selected (open) and you upload new files from your computer, those files will be automatically sorted into that active folder.

The Folderify sidebar is seamlessly integrated into the media selection dialogs of popular page builders like Elementor, Gutenberg, WooCommerce, Divi, Beaver Builder, and WPBakery.

6. Media Replacement

You can substitute an old media file with a new one without altering the existing file name or URL context.

  1. Open an image in the Media grid.
  2. Click the Replace button at the bottom.
  3. Select the new file from your computer.

There are two distinct replacement options:

  • Replace (Keep URL): The new file is uploaded and takes on the exact name of the original file. The image URL remains untouched, and all instances of the image across your site will update automatically.
  • Replace and Search: The new file retains its own uploaded name (resulting in a new URL). The system will scan your entire database and elegantly update all references of the old URL with the new URL across all specific pages and posts.

7. Role Permissions (PRO)

You have granular control over which user roles (e.g., Administrator, Editor, Author) are allowed to perform folder-specific actions on your site. Configure this via the Folderify -> Settings -> General under "Role Permissions".

  • Create: Determine who can add new folders.
  • Edit: Determine who can alter folder names, colors, and hierarchical order.
  • Delete: Determine who has the authority to remove folders.

8. Import / Export

Export (Free)

Within the Import / Export tab of the Settings menu, you can use the Download CSV button to backup your current folder structure in a text-based format.

Import (PRO)

Process a folder structure from external sources:

  • Via a previously exported CSV file from a different domain.
  • Instant Migration: If you have popular plugins like FileBird or Folders (Premio) installed, you can use the built it 1-click migration action to merge their exact folder allocations straight into Folderify.

9. Automated Backups (PRO)

To ensure absolute peace of mind for our clients, we've integrated robust security parameters allowing retrieval of accidental workflow mistakes.

  • Automated Snapshots: The plugin operates silently in the background, making a structural snapshot of all user's folder configurations each 24 hours.
  • Retention: The previous 30 days of historical footprints are stored, with older renditions purging themselves automatically.
  • Restoration: Proceed to the Backups menu, highlight the timestamp prior to the error occuring, press Restore, and files immediately conform back to their prior structural hierarchy.

10. Frequently Asked Questions

No. Your images are absolutely safe and will reside undisturbed on your server structure, returning identically to their native "Uncategorized" view.

Can an image manifest concurrently in multiple folders?

No, at this current revision an image maps exclusively 1:1 against a specific focal folder territory.

Is there an arbitrary ceiling to subfolder layering?

No. Using the Pro version you may cascade directories inside directories ad continuum down to whichever level solves your organizational necessity.
